Safe House 75

Safe House

The meeting in the Brooklyn safe house lasted for hours. The aerial view of the city was wiped out, replaced by a zoom of where we were, the vast warehouse, a roaming view across the corridor we had followed on our arrival, and, finally the room where we were. Sarah and I looked at each other; she later said I was as pale as a ghost.

The general explained that these views were taken by a drone above us at an altitude of twelve hundred meters. There was a silent pause. Then I said, “I do not know of any sensor capable of that level of precision across solid walls.”

Helga replied, “You are right Julian. We have used” – I noticed the “we” – “a US Airforce drone, but also a little cloud of Coven-technology sensors, controlled through it…”

Blue Eyes

I looked straight into Helga’s blue on blue eyes, then looked at Melissa. I saw them both smiling, and behind those smiles, I could not avoid thinking of alien minds, calculating, unassailable to any human being. At that moment, I was convinced that my friend was there, but she was no longer the woman I had known. She was someone – I hated the thought of thinking “something” – completely different. I also sensed that both of them, certainly Melissa, were determined to convince me that it was not the case, and I saw in Melissa’s face the beginning of seduction.

For the Benefit of Peace

The general resumed his exposé. The Great Power, her competitor in the East and the Coven were cooperating for the benefit of peace. The GP needed some of the Coven’s technology to achieve her goals. So, important and complex negotiations were taking place. There was a need for discretion, even secrecy, but also carefully tailored information to be presented to the public – a worldwide public – other than through the ordinary channels of commercial TV, radio and newspapers. They will be involved, but the new Alliance – the general actually used the phrase “the new Alliance” – was creating its own channel. And this is where we came in – the three of us, Sarah, Melissa, and me…

Jealousies

“There is danger,” the general continued. “Some countries and interests have deep suspicions about what the GP is about. There are jealousies and fear. Incidents may be misrepresented. False news may frighten the public. The conference in Berlin will be the locus for an official launch of the New Alliance.” The general paused, as if to let us reflect.

In a soft voice Gabrielle spoke for the first time. “Melissa and I are moving to Paris in order to prepare for this. You two are invited to join us next month. We have much to discuss to get you up to speed. For the time being, the small town is off limits.”

I was tempted to ask what is off limits and why, but a look from Sarah convinced me to hold back. The general concluded his account by asking us if we had any questions. To her credit Sarah realised that I am in no emotional state to reply.

Trust

The safe house was eerily silent. “We are grateful,” she said soberly, “for your trust and,” smiling in the direction of Gabrielle and Helga, “that of our friends here. As you all know, Julian and I have have entrusted Melissa to give us support as we endeavour to serve the cause of peace.”

Everybody smiled and Helga, yes, Helga came to me and hugged me. Soon, after saying good bye to the general, we walked down the corridor to the lift. Our guard was waiting. This time both Melissa and Gabrielle were with us.

Melissa drove us out of the warehouse and back to Long Island for the evening. A grey van followed us, its windows reflecting the light of sunset.

Notes for Research

Summary:
Drones play a significant role in modern warfare, offering various advantages such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeted strikes. Their ability to operate remotely and gather real-time intelligence makes them a valuable asset on the battlefield. However, their use also raises ethical and legal concerns, as they challenge traditional rules of engagement and civilian safety.

Report:

Title: The Role of Drones in Modern Warfare

Introduction:
Drones have revolutionized modern warfare, providing military forces with unprecedented capabilities. This report explores the role of drones in contemporary conflicts, focusing on their applied relevance and impact on military operations.

Surveillance and Reconnaissance:
Drones have become indispensable tools for gathering intelligence on enemy activities. Equipped with advanced cameras and sensors, they can conduct aerial surveillance, monitor enemy movements, and provide real-time situational awareness to military commanders.

Targeted Strikes:
One of the key advantages of drones is their ability to carry out precision strikes against enemy targets. Armed drones, commonly known as unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs), can accurately engage high-value targets while minimizing collateral damage and reducing the risk to human personnel.

Force Multiplier:
Drones act as force multipliers by augmenting the capabilities of conventional military forces. They can cover large areas, operate in challenging environments, and remain airborne for extended periods, enhancing the effectiveness of military operations.

Counterinsurgency Operations:
In counterinsurgency operations, drones have proven instrumental in identifying and neutralizing insurgent threats. Their ability to conduct persistent surveillance and track enemy movements in remote or hostile areas has significantly enhanced the effectiveness of counterinsurgency campaigns.

Ethical and Legal Concerns:
The use of drones in warfare raises ethical and legal questions. Critics argue that their remote operation and potential for autonomous decision-making distance operators from the consequences of their actions. Additionally, concerns about civilian casualties and the violation of sovereignty have sparked debates over the appropriate use and regulation of drones in warfare.

Conclusion:
Drones have become an integral part of modern warfare, offering unparalleled capabilities in surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeted strikes. While their applied relevance is undeniable, the ethical and legal implications surrounding their use must be carefully considered to ensure their responsible and effective deployment in future conflicts.
