Resistance to evil is the subject of this evocation of a conversation with my guardian angel.
the line separating good and evil
“Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either — but right through every human heart — and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains … an unuprooted small corner of evil.
Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.”
― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918–1956
Resistance to evil haunts me
Resistance to evil haunts me, night and day. My lady has been away from some time, but now she’s back. Soon I want to have one of these lengthy discussions, about her, about us, about me, about the world around us, about space, about the Creation, about evil, about resisting evil, about peace, about war. She’s my only adviser, part from what I learn in Ilyin, in Spengler, in many others. She’s my guide.
I want to talk with her about Dostoevsky, his books, his philosophy, and what we can learn from him. In our search for truth and light he’s among the top stars. I could easily lose my way, and she will help me not to lose the thread. She will help me to heal. For I am sick, and know I may not survive. May be she thinks I am exaggerating, because I am afraid, because she’s young, and I am not, say I, smiling.
Good too is in us
Good too is in us. This is the other subject I want to talk about with her: how to strengthen the small good person within us. “Evil begins where the person begins, and moreover it is not in the human body in all its states and manifestations as such, but the human psychospiritual world. This is the true residence of good and evil. No external state of the human body in itself, no external “act” of the person in itself (i.e. taken and discussed separately, detached from the psychospiritual state concealed behind it or given rise to it) can be either good or evil.”
So this is a complicated business, and I need her guidance through this rocky terrain.
