Your sister is sweet, Julian. Indeed she reminded me of you, as a young man. She has the same soft brown eyes, yet a firm gaze, the beautiful skin, healthy and Latin… You are beautiful people, not coarse like me… But you know what I mean, don’t you? Or maybe you don’t? Have you forgotten? A peasant is what I am, or rather, was. Still I was pleased to meet her, and I do apologise for surprising her.
In truth we were both amazed. I might have expected you, but not her. In some ways I got the name wrong: she’s the resident, not you. Of course, I recognised her immediately, from the pictures on your page… You have such a happy life, a beautiful sister, a gorgeous wife, both of whom love you… And you are a free man, with still a good many years of happiness in front of you. I cannot see anything going wrong for you, can you?
I left a message with Jane for you, and I am sure she will deliver it, soon. I think we made a good impression on each other. When you get my message you will know what to do, and, incidentally, I am sorry my page was inaccessible the other night when you tried. It has been repaired now! As you can guess, I do struggle a bit with that technology. We – beings of my sort – take time to understand: we were not born with it! But now, of course, we’ve understood its power…
I know you are looking, searching, questioning. I also know that I must go with you, to the old town, to the place where we found each other, so long ago. It is the place where I died, the place you left behind, for a world that no longer would know me. Perhaps you still have doubts, perhaps you are a little afraid of letting me back in your life. But there is nothing to fear. The one you love protects you, and to tell the truth she is also the threshold to me. If you want to find me, it is easy: she holds the key.
You have understood that the place is special. It was special then, because of us, because of our love, it is so now, but it was also special before you and I were born. It is one of the gates of our world, one of the gates to that other world you are beginning to see. And, yes I know, this is why you are questioning: you know that it started there.
I have decided that I will go with you, but you must accept that your love must go too. All three of us, for I cannot be with you and not with her, for we are a trinity.
You remember the old church? At that time, when we were so young, they were working in the ruins of the cloister. We could not see them. Now, the cloister is as it was, and there we will find an old medieval statue. They date that statue to the ninth century, but you should know that it is more ancient than that. It predates the Roman invasion. The cloister, and the statue, are why Gabrielle visited the town all those years ago.
